Good-sounding set of Johnny at the peak of his powers.

THE JOHNNY CASH SHOW

First 6 tracks are (local Aussie band) the Hawking Brothers. Sounds like an audience recording, but this audience member had a great seat! Very nice.

First 8 tracks are Carl Perkins. Sound quality is unexceptional.

JOHNNY CASH SINGS WITH THE

Johnny's mid-career lull produces a singularly fascinating anthropological document.

JOHNNY CASH: STUTTGART, GERMANY 4/23/81

The Johnnny Cash Show in all its glory. Really nice-sounding recording.

JOHNNY CASH:
INSIDE A SWEDISH PRISON
1982

Another trippy live recording from Johnny's Can't-Get-Arrested period, featuring lots of cool tunes I haven't heard him do elsewhere.

JOHNNY CASH 8/22/87
SEPOT, POLAND
1 DISC - 20 TRACKS
Sounds like another radio broadcast. Johnny sounds awesome.

"BRING IT BACK ALIVE" THE JOHNNY CASH SHOW
ROCKY GAP MUSIC FESTIVAL,CUMBERLAND, 8/25/90
1 DISC - 27 TRACKS
Beautiful sound. Must have been a broadcast. Great set, including Ragged Old Flag, The Fourth Man and Johnny does a train medley, with narration. Brilliant!

JOHNNY CASH: WE THE PEOPLE
1991
1 DISC - 29 TRACKS
Johnny narrates and occcasionally sings along with a patriotic program designed to coincide with the bicentennial of the US Constitution. With additional songs by many people I've never heard of.

JOHNNY CASH 3-28-91
2 DISCS - 37 TRACKS
Great audience recording of the full-on classic Johnny Cash Show.

JOHNNY CASH
DUBLIN, IRELAND 1993
1 DISC - 117 TRACKS
The standard "Johnny Cash Show" review, featuring the Carter Family and Kris Kristofferson and a set list of reliable ol' chestnuts. What a difference the next year would make! Pro-sounding recording.

JOHNNY CASH
RICK RUBIN'S LIVING ROOM, 5/93
2 DISCS - 43 TRACKS
Outstanding set. Expands the "American Outtakes" collection (see next entry).

JOHNNY CASH
AMERICAN RECORDINGS OUTTAKES
I DISC - 15 TRACKS
Recorded May 17-20, 1993
Rick Rubin's living room, Los Angeles, CA

JOHNNY CASH
MANHATTAN 1994
1 DISC - 14 TRACKS
Great set from the "American Recordings" tour. Perfecto sound, no interruptions, until some idiot DJ-type comes on and makes a quick sales pitch right in the middle of the last song. REALLY RESPECTFUL!!!!

JOHNNY CASH 6/26/94
GLASTONBURY
1 DISC - 15 TRACKS
Very well-circulated bootleg, and for good reason.

JOHNNY CASH 8/26/94
AT THE FILLMORE
2 DISCS - 29 TRACKS
Great set ("Down There By The Train!") marred somewhat by a far-away-sounding recording.

JOHNNY CASH 12/8/94
FRANK ERWIN CENTER, AUSTIN TEXAS
2 DISCS - 33 TRACKS
AMAZING set, leaning very heavily on tunes from the first American Recordings album. Very clean recording. Crank it up!

JOHNNY CASH
"UNCHAINED" OUTTAKES
1 DISC - 19 TRACKS
Mostly alternate recordings of tunes off the "Unchained" and "Solitary Man" albums, but with enough hilarious surprises (yes, I'm looking at you, "Don't Sell Daddy Any More Whiskey"!) to be well-worth the having.

JOHNNY CASH 7/23/95
2 DISCS - 36 TRACKS
I'd say about a B, B+ sound. Great set. Johnny's in great voice, and spirits.

JOHNNY CASH 7/9/96
IRVING PLAZA
1 DISC - 17 TRACKS and 2 DISCS - 24 TRACKS
It seems I have two recordings of this show. One is shorter, has better sound and is just Johnny Cash, and the other has somewhat weaker sound, but includes tunes carried by his supporting cast. Your choice.

JOHNNY CASH 9/17/96
DUESSELDORF, GERMANY
1 DISC - 19 TRACKS
He's great, but the sound is a tad tinny.

JOHNNY CASH 4/10/97
DUESSELDORF, GERMANY
1 DISC - 20 TRACKS
From a tape source, but it cleaned up real nice (thanks again, Larry).

JOHNNY CASH 9/28/02
HILTON, VA
1 DISC - 9 TRACKS
Recorded the summer before June died. Johnny's voice sounds like 30 miles of rough road, but he and June seem to be enjoying themselves, and the crowd is eating it right up. Still, a very bittersweet recording. Couple bonus tracks at the end, including "Tears on the Holsten River" with Earl Scruggs.

JOHNNY CASH 7/5/03
HILTON, VA
1 DISC - 14 TRACKS
Heart-breaking. A brutal listen for anyone who's ever loved Johnny Cash, and/or June Carter. Bonus tracks include several tunes from Johnny and June's appearance the year before at the same venue (see previous listing).

JOHNNY CASH: DOIN' TIME
1 DISC - 21 TRACKS
Interesting compilation of mostly non-Cash-album recordings from the American period, including lots of duets with crusty old white guys I can't identify.

JOHNNY CASH: HEROES AND FRIENDS
4 DISCS - 88 TRACKS
Somebody's labor of love! Truly impressive collection of rarities, duets, guest appearances and God knows what all else. You haven't lived till you've heard Johnny Cash harmonize with Julie Andrews on "Love Me Tender."

JOHNNY CASH: THE FRANKLIN BIBLE SESSIONS
2 DISCS - 26 TRACKS
Amazing. Johnny reads favorite Bible passages and tells what they mean to him. Kind of muddy sound, but that's just the way those Franklin bastards released it. Still shiver-inducing.

JOHNNY CASH: JOHN THE REVELATOR
1 DISC - 22 TRACKS
Johnny Cash reads the entire book of Revelations. From a 16-disc set of Johnny reading the entire New Testament. Recorded long enough ago that his voice is sure and strong, and recently enough that the recording is crystal clear. Superlatives cannot do it justice. (The 16-disc set is also out.)

TRIBUTE TO JOHNNY
1 DISC - 34 TRACKS (including separated-out spoken intros)
TV Show from 98(?) featuring, among other things, one amazing performance each from Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan & U2.

JOHNNY CASH INTERVIEW CIRCA 2000
1 DISC - 1 TRACK
Actor Tim Robbins sits the great man down and gets him to open up for almost an hour on everything. An outstanding find!

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO JOHNNY (Volumes 1 and 2)
Personal compilations of Johnny's spiritual tunes. Volume 2 is mostly explicit, Pentacostal stuff. Tres powerful!
